PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Intro Very recently we took a long hard look at the XFX R9 280X Double D video cards and loved that series stunning good looks, decent overclocking abilities and all round good value. This however did beg the question on whether or not similar attributes could be found on team Green - or if it was only team Red that had such an excellent blend. After searching and reaching out to most of our contacts we found what on the surface seemed to tick all the right boxes: the PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro. The PNY 980 Pro is not your average video card and even compared to the XFX Double D line it stands out. We must admit to being a sucker for industrial / naked aluminum color schemes so to us the 980 Pro perfectly fit the first of our criteria - unique and very aesthetically pleasing. Put simply it is drop dead gorgeous. However this card is not just a pretty face. Thanks to its custom heatsink and large fans this 980 should not only run cooler than the typical GeForce GTX 980 it should also overclock better as well - taking care of criteria #2. This cooler running abilities certainly will be put to the test as, unlike the XFX R9 280X TDFD which was basically a reference speed model, the PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro is an heavily factory overclocked model. Specifically PNY bestows upon every 980 Pro a clock speed of 1228MHz, a boost speed of 1329MHz, and even punches up the RAM speed to an effective 7,200MHz from the reference 7,010MHz. As a testament to the power and efficiency of the Maxwell core, all this comes at the cost of only 15 extra watts over what a reference 980's 165 watt power requirement. While the above certainly helped the 980 Pro get on our short list, its last feature is what sealed the deal for us: the price. Usually heavily overclocked, custom cooled models cost significantly more than their reference counterparts. Specifically you can count on a heavy surcharge for getting a guaranteed overclock. This to us is reasonable as guaranteeing a factory overclock setting takes time and costs money. In the case of the PNY 980 Pro, PNY only asks a mere 30$ more than what a reference GeForce GTX 980 goes for. When you take into account the lifetime warranty the PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro one tempting video card and certainly one worthy of a closer investigation! PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Specifications and Features PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - A Closer Look As with darn near any PNY retail shipping box, you will have to pay close attention to the actual model listed on it as the 980 Pro box looks pretty much like every other model PNY offers. The only real difference is the size - it is a touch larger, and the actual model number that's listed on the front. In the grand scheme of things this is only a minor issue as it still is a very attractive box filled with all the details you would need to make an informed purchase decision. Unlike the external box the internal packaging is not the same as the reference 980. Instead of the PNY typical clear top and white bottomed plastic enclosure PNY has opted to nestle the Pro in the middle of a cocoon of foam. This level of protection reduces the chances of damage to the card while in transit to basically zero. The included accessories may be a touch lacking compared to what XFX or ASUS include but they are still comprehensive enough to satisfy most consumers. In grand total PNY gives you a single 6pin PCI-e adapter, a single digital to analog port adapter, a quick start guide, a CD with the necessary drivers, and as a nice little bonus you get a mini-HDMI to full size HDMI adapter. This however is the exact same accessory list that the reference PNY 980 comes with. To be honest we do wish they had included a mini-DisplayPort to full size DisplayPort adapter, but given the fact that PNY only charges $30 extra for this model a certain amount of cost cutting is to be expected. Thankfully the PNY GeForce 980 GTX Pro looks nothing like the reference PNY GeForce 980 GTX. In fact terms like 'night and day' spring to mind when looking at this sexy beast and then thinking about the reference PNY 980. That is not to say that the reference 980 is an ugly duckling, it is a solid and fairly impressive card in its own right, rather it is simply a case of the 980 Pro being so much better than the reference model. To be blunt, for thirty bucks we would pick this Pro over the reference model just for the improved aesthetics - and simply consider the other benefits of the 980 Pro to simply be a bonus. Please do not get us wrong, this card is not some Apple device where form is more important than function. Instead this cards function demanded a powerful custom cooling solution and PNY engineers obviously felt that such an impressive piece of engineering deserved an equally impressive 'dress'. The end result is a card that is not only one of the most powerful cards we have ever seen but one that can easily hold its own against the XFX Double D's and ASUS Top's of the marketplace in the looks department. In fact PNY's use of extruded aluminum instead of plastic gives this card an even more refined and elegant look when compared to XFX plastic clad Double D. Specifically by opting for aluminum and not cheaper plastic for the fascia, they were able to create smooth clean lines that lack the seams of the XFX Double D or even Asus Top lines. Even more impressive is PNY took the time to get the little things right . In past generations PNY may have used aluminum for their fascia but they didn’t take the time to roll the edge and tuck it up to the PCB. Instead they used aluminum stampings and paint. This time they have taken the time to go the extra mile and the end result is one fluid and graceful card that blends the two parts into one seamless and cohesive whole - even the back of the PCB is covered in a nice full length aluminum backplate. With the beautiful fascia removed we can see that PNY has reused the same custom cooling solution that graced some of their custom PNY XLR8 700 series (https://realhardwarereviews.com/pny-geforce-gtx-770-xlr8-oc2/). This certainly is not a bad thing as this cooling solution is not only capable of keeping 250 watt video cards cool, but able to keep heavily overclocked 250 watt TDP video cards cool. Since the 980 Pro only has a 180 watt TDP that is a full seventy watts of 'free' additional cooling power that can be put towards keeping the 980 Pro's overclocked components temperatures in check. On the specifications side of the equation, what PNY has been able to create is sure to please even the most demanding of consumers. Specifically a reference (or 'stock') GeForce 980 GTX has 2048 CUDA cores that run at a base speed of 1126 which can be boosted to 1216Mhz. As we saw in previous reviews 2048 CUDA cores in conjunction with 128 texture units, and 64 Raster Operation Pipelines 'ROP' is a very potent combination. However, PNY has taken full advantage of the custom cooler and bestowed a factory overclock that has boosted base speed all the way to 1329MHz. This may not be the highest factory overclock we know of, but it still is a very impressive nine percent factory overclock on the Maxwell processor! Equally important is that they have factory overclocked the RAM to 7200MHz from 7010MHz. This may only seem like a minor - 2.7% - improvement, but it should help in memory bandwidth intensive tasks. As bonus it also leaves room for consumers to play with their 980 Pro and overclock the overclock. To help you do precisely that PNY has used an improved power delivery subsystem that consists of an all-digital 6 phase design with another two phases dedicated to the memory. On paper this may not sound as impressive as what some ASUS or XFX cards use, but the components PNY uses are greatly improved over their already very good 7 series counterparts. In fact PNY promises a 30% boost in current capacity over what their 7 series used. Considering most 980 cores run into NVIDIA's self-imposed maximum current 'wall' long before the power delivery subsystem fails to delivery stable power we have no doubts about the abilities of the 980 Pro to deliver clean stable power. If at any time you doubt the cards abilities to deliver stable power PNY has included voltage read contact on the corner of the PCB. Simply touch the proper contacts with a voltmeter and presto instant real-time feedback on what is exactly being fed to the various parts of the 980 Pro. To further help ensure that enough power is on tap, PNY has opted for a single 6-pin and a single 8-pin power inputs rather than just two 6-pin ports like reference models use. Considering this model only has a 15 watt TDP increase this is overkill - and points towards PNY knowing that most 980 Pro customers will simply use the factory overclock as their starting point. Where this card is a fully custom GeForce 980 it comes as no surprise to see that the input selection is also different than its reference counterparts. With a reference design, consumers get one full sized HDMI port, one DVI port, and three DisplayPort ports; however in order to offer full sized ports that meant the second rows cooling slits were nearly halved in number. Instead of compromising the cooling potential, PNY has instead opted for mini versions for ever port they could on their 980 Pro models. This compromise allows all the connectors to fit on one row, leaving the entire top row available for exhaust cutouts. In other words you get a mini-HDMI port, a full sized DVI port, but you will need to purchase adapters to use the three DisplayPort. However in return for this compromise you get lot more of the heat exhausted out the back of the case. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Testing Methodology To fully test the abilities of a given video card, we have used a blend of in-game benchmarks and custom recorded real world game benchmarking. For custom game play we have used FRAPS to record the minimum and average frame rates and to do so for a set period of time. All tests were run a minimum of four times and the scores are the average of all four runs. All games were patched to their latest version. The OS was a fresh clean install of Windows 7 with all latest hotfixes, patches and updates applied. All games were tested at the two of the most popular resolutions of 1080P (1920x1080) and then again at 1440P (2560x1440). This means each game’s tested was run a minimum of 8 times: 4 @ 1080P and 4 @1440P. Before testing Unigine’s Valley benchmark was run for 15 minutes to ‘warm up’ the video card. This was done to ensure that long term performance and not short term performance is being illustrated. The games used for testing were: Sleeping Dogs Metro: Last Light BioShock Infinite Crysis 3 Batman: Arkham Origins Tomb Raider Battliefield 4 Assassins Creed: Black Flag Call of Duty: Ghosts For stress testing we used Unigine’s Valley benchmark. For overclocking we used either the manufactures included software overclocking program or if necessary EVGA’s Precision X program. Power Supply: Corsair AX860i Monitor: Dell U2714H OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 Synthetic Game Benchmarks In the Synthetic Gaming Benchmarks section we will show a number of benchmark comparisons of the PNY GeForce XLR8 GTX 980 Pro and other comparable GPUs, using various benchmarks which come included with five popular modern PC games. This will illustrate how much performance this card has to offer. To ensure that long term performance is and not short term performance is illustrated 15 minutes of Unigine’s Valley benchmark was run to ‘warm up’ the video card. Only then were any tests run on the now warm video card. Real World In-Game Benchmarks In the Real Gaming Benchmarks section we will show a number of timed real world game play results using FRAPS and four popular modern PC games. This will illustrate how much performance the PNY GeForce XLR8 GTX 980 Pro has to offer and do so in a way which cannot be unduly skewed by driver ‘optimizations’ which have been included for the sole purpose of improving benchmark results. While not as common as it once was such optimizing is still not unheard of by either AMD or NVIDIA. Once again Unigine’s Valley benchmark was run for 15 minutes to ‘warm up’ the video card prior to testing. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Sleeping Dogs(SGB) Sleeping Dogs is an open world action-adventure video game developed by United Front Games in conjunction with Square Enix London Studios and published by Square Enix, released on August 2012. Sleeping Dogs has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are the Extreme display settings and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. World density is set to extreme, Vsync disabled, high-res textures are enabled, and shadow resolution, shadow filtering, screen space ambient occlusion, and quality motion blur are all set to high. At 1080P resolutions your $30 will net you basically a 6% performance increase over a reference GeForce GTX 980; whereas at 1440P you will gain nearly an additional 7%. That to us is a great use of $30. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Metro: Last Light(SGB) Metro: Last Light is a DX11 first-person shooter video game developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games and published by Deep Silver released in May 2013. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world and features action-oriented gameplay. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play. Scene D6 was used and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Very High for quality and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. DirectX 11 is used, texture filtering is set to AF 16X, motion blur is normal, SSA turned on and tessellation is set to high. Depending on your resolution, opting for the PNY 980 Pro over a reference 980 will gain you basically 6% boost in Metro Last Light. Once again that is nothing to sneeze at, and well worth $30. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - BioShock Infinite(SGB) BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter video game developed by Irrational Games, and published by 2K Games released in March 2013. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are UltraDX11 (option 3) for quality and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1800. BioShock Infinite was the hardest card on the PNY GeForce 980 Pro and you will only get an additional 4-5% increase in performance for $30. Let's say that again, the absolute worst case scenario is for your $30 investment you will 'only' get five percent better performance. Considering we have spent a lot more money for less improvement that is indeed a good deal. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Tomb Raider(SGB) Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game published by Square Enix and released in March 2013. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Ultimate default settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Tomb Raider is a game that favors AMD cards over NVIDIA and yet the PNY 980 Pro laughed at the new and 'improved' Laura Croft. By opting for this slightly more expensive 980 over a reference you will get about 7% frames per second improvement. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Batman Arkham Origins(SGB) Batman: AO is an action-adventure video game published by Warner Bros and released in October 2013. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Anti-Aliasing is set to TXAA (high). Motion blur, Distortion, Lens Flare, Light Shafts, and Reflections set to On. Geometry, Dynamic Shadows, Depth of Field, and Ambient Occlusion all set to DX11 Enhanced. Batman AO was the odd man out so to speak as the improvement will vary greatly depending on your resolution. At 1080P you will only get about 6% better performance, while 1440P users can expect to see a nearly 12% improvement! PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Battlefield 4(RWGB) Battlefield 4 is first person shooter video game, published by EA Digital Illusions CE and released in October 2013. Unlike most, this games does not include an in-game benchmark. This makes it perfect for more real world gaming tests. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded the first 90 seconds of the single player Tashgar level. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Ultra pre-set for quality, with VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Battlefield 4 may not love NVIDIA cards, but you would never tell it by the results the 980 Pro posts. To be concise expect about a 6% improvement for your $30. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Assassins Creed: Black Flag(RWGB) Assassins Creed: BF is an historical action-adventure video game, published by published by Ubisoft and released in October 2013. Like Battlefield 4 this games does not include an in-game benchmark. This makes it perfect for more real world gaming testing. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded a custom run through Havana’s marketplace. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Environment quality was set to very high, Anti-Aliasing was set to TXAA 4X, Ambient Occlusion set to HBAO+ (high), Shadow Quality set to ‘soft shadow’, Motion Blur and Volumetric Blur both set to On. Texture Quality, Reflection Quality, and God Rays all set to High. With Assassins Creed Black Flag you can expect an approximate 9% boost in performance at both 1080P and 1440P resolutions. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Call of Duty: Ghosts(RWGB) Call of Duty: Ghosts is a first person shooter video game, published by Activision and released in October 2013. Since it does not include an in-game benchmark, it perfect for more real world gaming testing. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded 90 seconds of the single player ‘Ghost Stories' level, starting as soon as we resume control of Logan back on Earth. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Image Quality, Textures Resolution, Normal Map Resolution, and Specular Map Resolution set to Extra. Screen Space Ambient Occlusion and Antistrophic Filtering set to High, Terrain Detail set to ON, and Anti-Aliasing was set to TXAA 4X. With Shadows, Distortion, Motion Blue and Depth of Field set to Yes. This is another title where the factory overclocking PNY does to their 980 Pro pays dividends as it allows the 980Pro to power past everything else in our charts. Of course the improvements are rather minor - 4 to 5 percent - but that is still a lot of performance boost for a mere $30. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Crysis 3(RWGB) Crysis 3 is a first person shooter video game, published by Electronic Arts and released in February 2013. While older than some of the others it is one of the most visually stunning games released to date and puts a lot of demands on the GPU. This makes it perfect for more real world gaming testing. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded 90 seconds of the single player ‘Post Human' level, starting as soon as soon as prophet is handed a Hammer II pistol by Psycho. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Texture Quality, Game Effects, Objects, Particles, Post Processing, Shadows, Shading, Water, and System Specs all set to Very High. Motion Blur was set to High and Lens Flare was set to On. Anti-Aliasing was set to MSAA 8X and Antistrophic Filtering was set to 16x. The more we tested this card the more we liked it, and with results like this it is really not hard to understand why. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Temperature, Noise, and Power Analysis Video Card Temperature Results For all temperature testing the cards were used in an open test bed environment. Ambient temperature was kept at a constant 20°C (+/- 0.5°C) and if the ambient room temperatures rose above 21°C or dropped below 19°C at any time, all benchmarking was stopped until proper temperatures could normalized. For Idle tests, we let the system idle at the Windows 7 desktop for 25 minutes and recorded the peak temperature. For Load tests, we ran Unigine’s Valley benchmark for 20 minutes. When you take two large and efficient fans, pair it to a high performance custom heatsink and use it on a rather cool running core the end results are indeed impressive. Simply put, even though PNY provides their 980 Pro customers with a large factory overclock its Maxwell core is still happy and cool running. Color us impressed. Sound Level Test Results While everyone "hears" noise differently there is one easy way to remove all subjectivness and easily compare different fans: use a sound level meter. This way you can easily compare the various fans noise envelopes without us coloring the results and see what fans fit within your personal comfort level. Of course, we will endeavor to try and explain the various results - which are taken at a 15 inch distance from the GPU’s fan(s) - to help you gain an even better understanding of how loud a cooler's stock fan is, but even if you discount our personal opinions, the fact remains numbers don't lie. For Idle tests, we let the system idle at the Windows 7 desktop for 25 minutes and recorded the peak dB. For Load tests, we ran Unigine’s Valley benchmark for 20 minutes and recorded the peak dB. We expected great things from the 980 Pro and we were not disappointed. No matter how noise sensitive you will like the 980 Pro as this is one quiet card. System Power Consumption To obtain accurate results we have connected the system to a Power Angle power meter that has in turn been attached to a 1500watt UPS. This ensures only 120volt power is supplied to the PSU and removes an variances that could potential crop up because of brownouts and power spikes. In order to stress the video card we have once again used Unigine’s Valley benchmark and ran it for 20 minutes to determine peak system power consumption. For idle results we have let the system idle at the Windows 7 desktop for 25 minutes and recorded the peak idle power consumption. Even though this card is heavily overclocked it will only cost you an extra 19 watts of electricity compared to a reference GTX 980. This may be higher than the 15 watts the increased TDP would lead you to believe but 19 watts is nothing in the grand scheme of things - our front speakers use more than that. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Overclocking To discover our PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro sample’s overclocking abilities we used EVGA’s Precision X software and began raising power and thermal thresholds to the maximum allowed and then increased the voltage also to the maximum permitted. Then using Unigine’s Valley benchmark we began stability testing. Thanks to its already heavy factory overclock we were not expecting to get much more out of the Maxwell core. In fact we were hoping to wring a tiny bit more out of it but expected the most gains to come from the memory side of the equation. While yes we did indeed get the RAM speed up to an effective 7.8GHz (or 11.3% over a reference 980 or 8.3% over the 980 Pros default 7200Mhz), the big surprise was on the Maxwell core and not the memory. Pardon the pun but we were blown away by what the 980 Pro was able to do. Obviously some of this impressive overclock comes from the custom heatsink and fans, but most come from the fact that PNY do heavily binning to their cores before choosing which ones to use for their 'Pro' model. Specifically we boosted the maximum speed to a whopping 1535. This is 15.5% boost in performance over what the 980 Pro comes with from the factor and a massive 26.2% over reference clock speeds. Put another way we were able to get an extra 600Mhz on the ram and 206MHz on the core. Considering that this card only costs $30 more than a reference card we can't imagine ever buying a stock 980 again. PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Performance Summary and TL;DR In an effort to make sorting through all the results as easy as possible we have combined the results all of all the game results into an easy to digest summary format. By comparing the PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro to similar products in all the games you will be able to easily find the game(s) you are interested in, see the improvement and decide if the PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro is the worth the investment. The PNY 980 Pro is the very epitome of what a high end custom card should be. In fact it is what every reference GeForce GTX 980 hopes to be when it grows up. It simply is a stunning performer that is also an amazing value*. *for its class PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Score Card and Summary Packaging & Accessories: 7 out of 10 The shipping container and accessories are classic PNY XLR8’er. That is to say it is decent bordering on above average. The same can be said of the included accessories - decent if not stellar. However the lifetime warranty and foam internal protection does push the PNY 980 Pro up a level and we have very few things to nitpick on this front. Functionality & Aesthetics: 19 out of 20 Thanks to its excellent custom heatsink this card is not only a beautiful performer, it is also a beautiful card. In fact we prefer its good looks over the Double D and TOP designs. Build Quality & Warranty : 18 out of 20 This card looks gorgeous, performs very well and is built like a custom hot rod. When you mix in a lifetime warranty there is not much to complain about on this front. Performance: 28 out of 30 A stock GeForce GTX 980 is a very powerful card, yet a highly overclocked GeForce GTX 980 is phenomenal. Without a doubt this level of performance is what all 980's should have come with when NVIDIA released the 980 series. Value: 18 out of 20 Yes this card is expensive and yet the amount of value it offers consumers is simply astounding. For $30 more consumers get better acoustics, a great factory overclocking, a drop dead gorgeous design, and yes still even get a lifetime warranty. What more could you ask for from a $30 investment?! Final Score: 90 out of 100 This card really is the full package, and while it may require you selling a lot of blood, and maybe even a kidney, it easily justifies its asking price - and then some. In one quick, decisive move PNY has signaled the death knell of 'reference' 980 cards - as there is simply no good reason to save the minor amount of cash. Beauty, brains, and value, what more could you want from you next high end performance video card?! PNY XLR8 GTX 980 Pro - Closing Statement The PNY GeForce GTX 980 Pro is everything anyone could ask for in a video card. Its gorgeous good looks make it the perfect finishing touch to any custom PC. Its excellent custom cooler is not only quiet but supremely capable at cooling its overclocked Maxwell core, and the factory overclocking means that you don’t even have to bother with overclocking if you don’t want to - as the hard work has been done for you. The only positive down side to buying this card over a reference card is the fact that nearly all the fun of overclocking has been taken from you. While yes there is still going to be some room left you will not get the massive gains that you can sometimes discover with reference 'golden' GeForce GTX 980s. Of course, not every 980 will be able to beat this cards factory settings and for $30 you get assurances on exactly what levels of performance you are buying before you even pay for the card. All these facts are certainly true and yet only tells half the story, and maybe a quarter of why we love this card so much and how it was able to quickly impress us like few before it have been able to do. Put bluntly this level of performance is what all GeForce GTX 980's should offer, and the PNY 980 Pro should be nothing special. Sadly NVIDIA were once again overly conservative in their reference speeds and the end result was that when first released the GeForce 980 was not a slam dunk success over its predecessor it should have been. In fact there were times when its CUDA cores and Texture Units resulted in a loss to the previous GeForce GTX 780. Compare and contrast that with this 980 that, even when compared to the massive GeForce GTX 780Ti, consistently beat everything else at all resolutions. This is what a new generation should do, yet sadly it was left to PNY and other bold companies to find the true potential of Maxwell architecture. When you take all that into consideration and then mix in the fact that it only costs a piddly thirty dollars more than reference cards there really is not much to complain about. To be perfectly candid this card has spoiled us and we can never imagine buying another reference 980 card again.
