The SUPERIOR PRO MICROSDXC UHS-II’s series’ series comes in a classic Silicon Power SD card shipping container. One that seamlessly combines information with aesthetics. The only point of contention is that this is a carboard sleeve style ‘box’ that relies upon a thin plastic clamshell for its protection. So, while it is easy to understand precisely what you are getting before you purchase, even moderate amounts of physical abuse will be transferred to the microSDXC card housed ‘inside’.
On the positive side the plastic clamshell fitted inside the cardboard sleeve can be reused as a storage container. While not nearly as robust as the typical one included with other manufactures, but it will get the job done of keeping dust and even fluids from getting all over your backup SD card when not in use.
Also on the positive side, Silicon Power includes a micro to standard size SD card adapter that is UHS-II enabled. This is a very nice bonus as there are numerous competitors who either include nothing, or a microSD USB card reader. Of the three options the adapter is the most optimal. It simply ‘just works’ and works well.
As you can see the Superior Pro Micro SDXC UHS-II is not your typical microSDXC card. While it is indeed a true microSD UHS-II card Silicon Power has put their own spin on what this should and should not mean. First and foremost is it is not your ‘basic black’ thumbnail sized storage device. Instead it is white. This may not sound like much of a difference but it does two things you need to be aware of. First, and least, is if you own a number of microSD card it is downright easy to find this card in a stack of typical black plastic clad cards. More importantly is it makes getting a counterfeit much, much harder. White is rather rare so the chances of actually getting a 4GB Chinesium counterfeit instead of the fast 128GB’er you thought your buying is all but eliminated. Scammers go for the lowest hanging fruit and having to source out cheap white microSD cards would be more hassle than it is worth given the fact that the vast majprity of the competition uses black plastic.
These two features are only the start of how Silicon Power’s design team thought outside the box. In addition to being V90 certified (ie minimum of 90MB/s performance) this card is also 8K HD certified. While not listed on the box or card itself the Silicon Power Superior Pro microSDXC UHS-II easily meets the rather difficult A2 standard of 4000 IOPS for read, and 2000 IOPS for write. This in conjunction with its rather high-performance guarantees of 290/160 MB/s means this card is in rarefied heights with only a handful of other cards directly competition against it. Of those we cannot think of a single 128GB microSD card that can match it and also come in at NN cents per GB. Now that is impressive to say the least.
The last feature that further reinforces the idea that this is not your typical micro-SD card is the fact that it is waterproof, shockproof, temperature-proof, and even X-ray-proof. Each of these will be enticing to different people but certainly is impressive. For example, the X-ray proofing means your data will not get corrupted when it goes through security at the airport (and no one wants to be stuck on a long plane ride without a good assortment of music and movies to watch… let alone have their vacation photos nuked while coming back from vacation). Though to us the temperature resistance is actually the most important. Being rated to a 70-degrees Celsius / 158 Fahrenheit means that they can take the abuse long, sustained burst writing can place upon a SD card. Heat build up is actually the leading cause of SD card death… and we personally have killed many a card from simply constantly using the darn thing.
