PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Introduction Even though NVIDIA's 10-series of video cards have grabbed the lion's share of the limelight recently the fact still remains that 'older' 9-series cards did not suddenly turn into turtles. Rather their performance is the same as it was before the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 and 1070 were released – and 1060 announced. All that has changed is their prices have plummeted as the market has become filled with used 9-series cards from people upgrading. This has created a rather unique opportunity for consumers to get excellent video card horsepower without breaking their budgets. This is fairly par for the course with the release of any new generation cards. However, what if we told you there was another option besides buying used cards? You see while other manufactures have been rushing to abandon their 9-series models, PNY on the other hand has embraced this opportunity and recently released a new GeForce GTX 960 and 950 models! Today we will be looking at the 960 model. As the name suggests this new PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB model is not only a new GeForce GTX 960 model, but also a factory overclocked model – the only type of 960s we would ever buy. As everyone knows the later into a product cycle you get the more mature it becomes. For manufactures this means having access to a lot more 'overclockable' NVIDIA GPUs than in the early days. For consumers this means that getting better than stock performance also costs less – as factory binning costs money! This is why the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming comes with an MSRP of only $210 (USD) and yet comes with a 5.2 percent factory overclock on the '960 core. To be more precise instead of 1127Mhz and 1,178MHz boost, this card comes set at the factory at 1,203/1,266. As we saw in previous reviews, such as the PNY Elite OC 960 (https://realhardwarereviews.com/pny-geforce-xlr8-gtx-960-elite/), this results in a noticeably bump in overall performance. However, this is one the start of the freedom that PNY's engineer have been granted by using a mature technology. In the past factory overclocked GeForce GTX 960 models always came with stock RAM settings of an effective speed of 7Ghz. The PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB on the other hand has this boost to 7.2GHz. This too has been shown to boost performance nicely and while the GPU core is not set as high as some this unique combination certainly will make this model more effective at pushing pixels than the core speeds would lead one to believe. [youtube jsfxRMZosyg[/youtube The fact that PNY has released a new model this late is indeed eyebrow raising, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. The new PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB model is not just a re-release of previous design and instead boasts an entirely redesigned custom heatsink and fan combination that promises to not only be more effective than previous models but also much more aesthetically pleasing as this unit not only uses a more elegant looking design but also comes with integrated LEDs for that little extra attention getting je ne sais quoi. It is this combination that makes the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming not only very intriguing on its own, but may just make for an excellent dual card setup that looks as good as it performs. Sounds interesting doesn't?! So let's put these two cards under the microscope and see if they can indeed emerge from the 'fog of war' and prove that the GeForce GTX 960 still has some life left in it! PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Specifications and Features PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - A Closer Look Obviously PNY has been listening to consumer and reviewer feedback as unlike previous XLR8 models, that all used the same shipping container, the new PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming uses a slightly different box. While it is the same size, it is much more eye catching and much, much easier to instantly know what model you are holding in your hand. To us this is a good thing, and a great upgrade. Also upgrade is the internal protective case. Instead of a plastic case to hold the video card in, the GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming has taken a page from PNY's more upscale 'elite' models and used high density foam. This adds very little weight but is eons better at absorbing blunt force trauma. This too is a good thing as we have had GPUs dropped… kicked… and generally abused by shipping companies in the past! As you can see the accessories which accompany this model have not gotten a refresh like the box. Instead you will find basically the same list of accessories which ships with any previous PNY GeForce GTX 960 model: a single 6pin PCI-e adapter, a single digital to analog port adapter, a quick start guide, and a CD with the necessary drivers. Overall this covers all the bases nicely and we have little issues with PNY not including more than this. If one wanted to crudely describe this new heatsink and fan design in just a few words to someone who has never seen it, you could say that PNY took their Elite OC design, 'married' it to a 'Double D' and this was the offspring of that consummation. We personally don’t like such crude analogies but it is actually very fitting. Put another way, the older heatsink and design was darn good, but as it was a recycle from the 7-series days so it was getting a little long in the tooth. As to specifics the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming uses an extremely attractive and plastic top fascia. This fascia does give the unit a very aesthetically pleasing look when installed into a system; however, unlike the Elite OC that used a darkish gray fascia that was rounded and curved, this new model is much less busy in comparison. This lends the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming a much more elegant and sophisticated look. However, the combination of jet black with 'worn' red spray paint makes it clear that this model is not just meant to be looked at but is meant to push some serious pixels. It just is unfortunate that PNY did not opt for a backplate for this model as this would have further increased the overall attractiveness of this design. Given the more budget orientated price of this model this is more than understandable – but it still is a missed opportunity as MSI was able to find room in their model's budget for a backplate. As stated in the introduction this model does come with a moderately heavy factory overclock that increases the NIVIDIA reference stock speed from 1,127MHz to 1,203MHz and the boost speed from 1,178 to 1,266MHz. Given the low TDP nature of the GM206 core two massive heatpipes and a large fin array not only keeps this GM206 nice and cool but will allow it to hit and stay at its boost speed longer than ever before. To ensure that this is indeed the case the two large PNY branded fans push a massive amount of air. These fans do have integrated red LEDs that glow nicely in a case… and would go perfectly with LED equipped motherboard. Interestingly enough, and unlike the Elite OC, PNY has not felt the need to include the secondary metal under plate to keep the other components cool. Instead they have opted for a true secondary heatsink for the VRM. The overall surface area and cooling potential is probably the same but this does have one significant downside. This downside is readily apparent when you remove the heatsink and take a look at the all custom PCB. As you can see the RAM modules are not covered; rather they rely upon passive airflow to ensure that they stay cool. This is not that concerning as these ICs are rated for very high temperatures and the majority of the waste air flowing through the cooling fin array will wash down and over them as such the missing secondary heat plate is not overly concerning. Equally important is the fascia and fans do not overhang the PCB all that much like they do on the Elite OC model. Instead the PCB is nearly the full length of the fascia covering and is the full length of the two fans. This does spread the components out more and ensures that even more air from the fans actually flows over components instead of just off the end of the PCB. Before moving on to the VRM we do feel it is worth pointing out that this new design is no taller than the older Elite OC design. As we have noted in the past a lot of newer models are significantly 'taller' than the PCIe slot standards and can be a bit of a nuisance to work with in smaller cases as they 'overhang' the PCIe slot tab that secured the board to the case. PNY did not feel the need to do this and instead simply made their design more effective instead of relying upon brute force. Brilliant stuff! As you can see even though there is room for a 4-phase design, PNY has opted to only populate three of these channels. This is not all that unexpected as the GM206 is a very efficient core that does not need massive amounts of voltage to be boosted in to the stratosphere. Of course, more is always better but not once did we feel that this 3 phase all digital design limited our overclocking abilities. To power this device PNY once again has opted for a single 6-pin PCIe connector. Unlike some other designs that really need a 8-pin a 960, even a factory overclocked model, really does not 'need' an 8-pin connector. In overclocking testing states the 6-pin did not limit things at all, but by the same token our power supply is rather heavy duty and more than capable of pushing much more than 75watts over the 6-pin connector. When overclocking any video card we do recommend a bigger power supply than what is recommended by NVIDIA. The input selection of this card is rather interesting as it is not PNY's reference GeForce GTX 960 selection. Instead of 1 HDMI, 1 DVI-D, and 3 DP ports; the XLR8 OC Gaming comes with the two DVI-D, and one (full-size) HDMI, as well as one (full-size) DP ports. This covers all the bases nicely and does so without needing adapters. Equally important due to the layout there is plenty of rear ventilation slits so some of hot air should still exhaust out the back of the case – even though this card makes use of a custom dual downdraft cooler instead of a reference blower design. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Testing Methodology To fully test the abilities of a given video card, we have used a blend of in-game benchmarks and custom recorded real world game benchmarking. For custom game play we have used FRAPS to record the minimum and average frame rates and to do so for a set period of time. All tests were run a minimum of four times and the scores are the average of all four runs. All games were patched to their latest version. The OS was a fresh clean install of Windows 7 with all latest hotfixes, patches and updates applied. All games were tested at the two of the most popular resolutions of 1080P (1920x1080) and then again at 1440P (2560x1440). This means each game’s tested was run a minimum of 8 times: 4 @ 1080P and 4 @1440P. Before testing Unigine’s Valley benchmark was run for 15 minutes to ‘warm up’ the video card. This was done to ensure that long term performance and not short term performance is being illustrated. The games used for testing were: Sleeping Dogs Metro: Last Light BioShock Infinite Crysis 3 Batman: Arkham Origins Tomb Raider Battlefield 4 Assassins Creed: Black Flag Call of Duty: Ghosts Witcher 3 For stress testing we used Unigine’s Valley benchmark. For overclocking we used either the manufactures included software overclocking program or if necessary EVGA’s Precision X program. Sleeping Dogs has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are the Extreme display settings and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. World density is set to extreme, Vsync disabled, high-res textures are enabled, and shadow resolution, shadow filtering, screen space ambient occlusion, and quality motion blur are all set to high. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Metro: Last Light Metro: Last Light is a DX11 first-person shooter video game developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games and published by Deep Silver released in May 2013. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world and features action-oriented gameplay. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play. Scene D6 was used and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Very High for quality and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. DirectX 11 is used, texture filtering is set to AF 16X, motion blur is normal, SSA turned on and tessellation is set to high. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - BioShock Infinite BioShock Infinite is a first-person shooter video game developed by Irrational Games, and published by 2K Games released in March 2013. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are UltraDX11 (option 3) for quality and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Tomb Raider Tomb Raider is an action-adventure video game published by Square Enix and released in March 2013. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Ultimate default settings for quality (sans 'hair' shading), VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Batman Arkham Origins Batman: AO is an action-adventure video game published by Warner Bros and released in October 2013. The game has a benchmark component to it that mimics game play and an average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Anti-Aliasing is set to TXAA (high). Motion blur, Distortion, Lens Flare, Light Shafts, and Reflections set to On. Geometry, Dynamic Shadows, Depth of Field, and Ambient Occlusion all set to DX11 Enhanced. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Battlefield 4 Battlefield 4 is first person shooter video game, published by EA Digital Illusions CE and released in October 2013. Unlike most, this games does not include an in-game benchmark. This makes it perfect for more real world gaming tests. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded the first 90 seconds of the single player Tashgar level. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Ultra pre-set for quality, with VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Assassins Creed: Black Flag Assassins Creed: BF is an historical action-adventure video game, published by published by Ubisoft and released in October 2013. Like Battlefield 4 this games does not include an in-game benchmark. This makes it perfect for more real world gaming testing. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded a custom run through Havana’s marketplace. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Environment quality was set to very high, Anti-Aliasing was set to TXAA 4X, Ambient Occlusion set to HBAO+ (high), Shadow Quality set to ‘soft shadow’, Motion Blur and Volumetric Blur both set to On. Texture Quality, Reflection Quality, and God Rays all set to High. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Call of Duty: Ghosts Call of Duty: Ghosts is a first person shooter video game, published by Activision and released in October 2013. Since it does not include an in-game benchmark, it perfect for more real world gaming testing. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded 90 seconds of the single player ‘Ghost Stories' level, starting as soon as we resume control of Logan back on Earth. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Image Quality, Textures Resolution, Normal Map Resolution, and Specular Map Resolution set to Extra. Screen Space Ambient Occlusion and Antistrophic Filtering set to High, Terrain Detail set to ON, and Anti-Aliasing was set to TXAA 4X. With Shadows, Distortion, Motion Blue and Depth of Field set to Yes. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Crysis 3 Crysis 3 is a first person shooter video game, published by Electronic Arts and released in February 2013. While older than some of the others it is one of the most visually stunning games released to date and puts a lot of demands on the GPU. This makes it perfect for more real world gaming testing. To obtain repeatable results we have used FRAPs and recorded 90 seconds of the single player ‘Post Human' level, starting as soon as soon as prophet is handed a Hammer II pistol by Psycho. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are highest settings for quality, VSync disabled and a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. Texture Quality, Game Effects, Objects, Particles, Post Processing, Shadows, Shading, Water, and System Specs all set to Very High. Motion Blur was set to High and Lens Flare was set to On. Anti-Aliasing was set to MSAA 8X and Antistrophic Filtering was set to 16x. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Witcher 3 Witcher 3 is an action role-playing video game set in an open world environment, developed by Polish video game developer CD Projekt RED and released on May 2015. Our test uses a real world timed benchmark that consists of three minutes of game play during the 'Beast of the White Orchard' quest. This section of the game incorporates everything from grass, to water, to hair, to numerous NPCs. An average of four runs was taken. The settings used in the testing below are Ultra display settings, but with HairWorks off and Vsync disabled, at a resolution of 2560x1440 and 1920x1080. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Temperature, Noise, and Power Analysis Video Card Temperature Results For all temperature testing the cards were used in an open test bed environment. Ambient temperature was kept at a constant 20°C (+/- 0.5°C) and if the ambient room temperatures rose above 21°C or dropped below 19°C at any time, all benchmarking was stopped until proper temperatures could normalized. For Idle tests, we let the system idle at the Windows 7 desktop for 25 minutes and recorded the peak temperature. For Load tests, we ran Unigine’s Valley benchmark for 20 minutes. We are not all that surprised to see how cool running the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB card really is. After all the GM206 core has always been known as a rather efficient design, and when paired with a rather impressive -for its class – heatsink and fan design anything less than excellent would have been disappointing. Sound Level Test Results While everyone "hears" noise differently there is one easy way to remove all subjectivness and easily compare different fans: use a sound level meter. This way you can easily compare the various fans noise envelopes without us coloring the results and see what fans fit within your personal comfort level. Of course, we will endeavor to try and explain the various results - which are taken at a 15 inch distance from the GPU’s fan(s) - to help you gain an even better understanding of how loud a cooler's stock fan is, but even if you discount our personal opinions, the fact remains numbers don't lie. For Idle tests, we let the system idle at the Windows 7 desktop for 25 minutes and recorded the peak dB. For Load tests, we ran Unigine’s Valley benchmark for 20 minutes and recorded the peak dB. Thanks to a cool running core, even when overclocked, and an excellent custom heatsink and fan design the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB is a rather silent running card. Better still is it does come with a 'silent' mode that can and will stop the fans when the video card is idling. That just underscores exactly how efficient and effective this custom heatsink really is. System Power Consumption To obtain accurate results we have connected the system to a Power Angle power meter that has in turn been attached to a 1500watt UPS. This ensures only 120volt power is supplied to the PSU and removes an variances that could potential crop up because of brownouts and power spikes. In order to stress the video card we have once again used Unigine’s Valley benchmark and ran it for 20 minutes to determine peak system power consumption. For idle results we have let the system idle at the Windows 7 desktop for 25 minutes and recorded the peak idle power consumption. Even though this card comes with both its core and its RAM factory overclocked it still is an incredibly low power consumption video card. Color us impressed. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Overclocking To discover our sample’s overclocking abilities we used EVGA’s Precision X software and began raising power and thermal thresholds to the maximum allowed and then increased the voltage also to the maximum permitted. Then using Unigine’s Valley benchmark we began stability testing. As this is very late in the GM206's product cycle we knew that this was an extremely mature process and have long since worked out what can and cannot be done to most of them. This is why we had a sneaking suspicion that PNY may have given their OC Gaming GTX 960 a healthy factory overclock but they were still being very conservative. Put another way we had a feeling that PNY had left a lot of untapped potential for brave consumers to find – as there does come a point where more factory binning simply does not make financial sense. In this regards we were right, there is still plenty of headroom for enthusiasts to find; however, what we were not expecting was the temperatures to stay so mild. Even when compared to the MSI Gaming 2 GeForce GTX 960 video card the PNY OC Gaming is a cooling beast. So much so that unless you get a bad overclocking chip thermal walls are not what you are going to run into. Instead you will run into NVIDIA's acritical voltage limitation and that will be what finally limits your overclock. With that being said we doubt many will be displeased with what they can push their card too, as 1498 on the core is nothing to sneeze at! To put this in perspective this represent an addition 232 Mhz over the factory overclock setting, or a whopping 320Mhz over NVIDIA reference levels. Put another way you can expect to get an addition 24.5 percent overclock on top of the already 33% factory overclock – for an amazing total overclock! Even more impressive is that our already factory overclocked RAM ICs (they come with an 200Mhz effective overclock applied at the factory) can easily be pushed further and harder than most would expect. To be precise we easily turn 7200 into 7928 effective setting. This combination of insanely high GPU core setting with nosebleed RAM makes for one potent video card. So much so that it will be noticed in real world scenarios and can close the gap between a GeForce GTX 960 and 970. Brilliant stuff! It is just a shame that PNY left so much potential performance on the table. But as the old saying goes " Fortuna Audaces Iuvat " – Fortune Favors the Bold! PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Performance Summary and TL;DR In an effort to make sorting through all the results as easy as possible we have combined the results all of all the game results into an easy to digest summary format. By comparing it to similar products in all the games you will be able to easily find the game(s) you are interested in, see the improvement and decide if it is the worth the investment. Single Video Card SLI Video Card While the GM206 core may not be overclocked as high as some, the increased bandwidth afforded by the factory overclocking of the RAM more than makes up for it! Score Card and Summary Packaging & Accessories: 8 out of 10 The packaging the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB has gotten a nice upgrade from an already decent baseline. In other words this shipping container looks very good, offers excellent protection, and has a lot of information on the back. This to us is a winning combination, and it is rather unfortunate that PNY did not also upgrade the included accessories. Though even here the best accessory of them all – a lifetime warranty - is included! Functionality & Aesthetics: 18 out of 20 While we do consider the PNY GeForce GTX 980 OC Elite's silver metallic design to be the best that PNY has ever produced this new model certainly is right up there. The combination of LED fans with a black fan covering a custom heatsink is indeed impressive. Better still is this combination proved to be very, very potent and every bit as functional as it is good looking. Build Quality & Warranty: 17 out of 20 On the one hand a lifetime warranty is hard to beat, but on the other we do wish that PNY had actually populated all four phases of their VRM design. Basically while the 3-phase used is good and did prove itself during the overclocking stages, there is still room for improvement. Performance: 25 out of 30 As we saw throughout testing the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB has a lot of performance potential, it is just unfortunate that even more is readily available if only PNY had been able to push the rather conservative factory settings even higher. By the same token two of these cards are rather potent and are arguably a much better idea than a single 980! Value: 19 out of 20 There are no ifs, no butts, and no ands about it. This card is an incredible value. So much so that even with 980 and 980ti used prices plummeting a pair of these still offer a better overall better performance for the same price. That is bloody marvelous value if we do say so ourselves. Final Score: 87 out of 100 It may be late to the party but the PNY GeForce GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming 2GB is easily the best GeForce GTX 960 PNY has ever created. Color us impressed. PNY GTX 960 XLR8 OC Gaming - Closing Statement Right now used GeForce GTX 980Ti video cards are selling for between 350 and 450 dollars - with stock being cheaper than factory overclocked models. Considering the GeForce GTX 1070 card (which about the same to a bit better) retails for about $550 this certainly is a very good deal for knowledgeable consumers willing to take a small chance on used cards. However, as we saw throughout testing a pair of brand new PNY GeForce GTX 960 cards in SLI is easily as good as one 980Ti card. Even excluding further overclocking from the equation these cards represent one hell of a value. Basically instead of having to take a risk on used (and potentially abused) cards consumers can spend about the same amount and not only get better performance than a stock 980Ti but get a lifetime warranty. For knowledgeable consumers on a tight budget that is a veritable no-brainer. Just this fact alone makes the new PNY 960's one hell of a deal and do enthusiastically applaud PNY for seeing this opportunity and capitalizing on it. In our opinion the very fact that they are willing to take such a large risk this late in a product cycle just underscores their commitment to offering consumers the best value possible. Make no mistake releasing a 960 this late in the product cycle is considered by most to be courting disaster. After all, "Everyone Knows" that consumers are not interested in old technology and only new and shiny tech will do! Yeah. No. While a fool and his money are soon parted the wise consumer does not look at model numbers, we look at performance and price. A pair of these cards in SLI excels on both fronts. Hell, even just one of these cards excels at this as there is nothing stopping consumers from purchasing a second one at a later date – as a lifetime warranty is just that: a lifetime . Beyond 'just' offering a massive value this new PNY 960 series also has other things going for it. Since the X99 refresh 2016 is going to go down as the Year of the LED. New motherboards are all coming equipped with LEDs and system builders who really want to build a system that truly integrates with one another will absolutely love the built in LEDs PNY has included. It really does give a nice little accent to a system and one that few other cards from this generation can offer. Equally important, PNY has also given us a taste of things to come with regards to their next generation custom heatsinks designs. To be precise this new design really is more than just a pretty face as it is amazingly potent. So much so that it can allow consumers to boost the already good performance all the way into the stratosphere. Honestly consumers are going to run out of voltage long before they hit a thermal wall with this new design – and the fact that is looks even better than the Elite OC series is just pure icing. We expect PNY's 10-series to come with similar heatsinks and that is a rather exciting proposition for enthusiasts to say the least! Taken as a whole PNY may have taken a risk, but we can see this card quickly become a cult classic amongst system builders and enthusiasts always on the look out for a great deal – especially once prices fall in the wake of the upcoming 1060. Congratulations PNY for doing what no other video card manufacture had the intestinal fortitude to do. If this series fails it will because consumers failed PNY, not that PNY failed consumers.
