Is the Nixeus NX-EDG274K going to be the monitor used by all the Professional Gaming ‘Athletes’ in the coming months? No. Nixeus (to the best of our knowledge) does not sponsor (read pay) ‘athletes’ to use their gear in order to gin up sales. They let their models do their own talking. Will NatGeo and other professional photo and video -graphers be lining up to buy the Nixeus NX-EDG274K? Probably not. It is not a 10-bit monitor… and the likes of NEC and Eizo all but own this niche.
Those are the two groups who will not be enamored with the Nixeus NX-EDG274K. If you are in this elite stratosphere you can stop right now. Be ready to spend the cost of a used car on your next monitor. It is what it is. Monitors for these elites are tools. Tools that are used to make them money, and the upfront cost is not even on their priorities list.
An argument could also be made that both hardcore gaming enthusiasts and users with potato grade GPUs may, or may not, like what the Nixeus NX-EDG274K has to offer. While it does offer rather good, and sometimes stunning, gaming immersion the Nixeus NX-EDG274K is more of a ‘jack of all trades’ type monitor. It does offer upwards of 144Hz of 4K gaming goodness… but its Variable Refresh Rate technology does not kick in until 48Hz. When you add in the fact that it is more AMD centric (as NVIDIA is dam near antagonistic to Free/Adaptive-Sync) with the fact that it lacks advanced motion blur reduction to go along with its VRR…the end result is it is a monitor that may be able to whistle many tunes, but will rarely be confused with a true expert in any one area.
This really is not a bad thing. Few people buy a monitor to just do one thing, and those that do are rocking multi-monitor configurations. One (or two) for gaming, one for general purpose, and one for photo/video editing. Most of those that buy one and only one monitor do not want a niche product. They want a monitor that can do a bit of everything and do it all fairly well. If it can do all that and not cost a relative fortune… well that is pretty much the ‘perfect’ monitor for most.
This in a nutshell is what the Nixeus NX-EDG274K is all about. With a razor-sharp dot-pitch that has to be seen to believed, backstopped by 4K resolution at 144Hz the Nixeus NX-EDG274K’s panel is a great all-rounder that just happens to cost less than what the typical high refresh-rate 4K monitor demands these days. When you then mix in deep, rich, (if ‘only’ 8bit) color abilities with actually good On-Screen Display correction abilities the EDG274K truly is tailor made for a wide swath of the general public. So, while there is room for improvement on both the gaming and professional front, the Nixeus NX-EDG274K is pretty much the epitome of value right now in this corner of the marketplace. If you are thinking about taking the plunge into the world of 4K monitors and do not want to break the bank the Nixeus NX-EDG274K is potentially a great choice. Just don’t let the reasonable asking price fool you. It all but proves that you do not need to spend a fortune to get a good and fast 4K monitor.
The Review
Nixeus NX-EDG274K
As long as you have the video card horsepower to handle 4K gaming the EDG274K is sure to please. The only issue will be having enough horsepower to stay above 48Hz. Below this and users will be relying upon LFC instead of VRR.
