Performance: 38 out of 40.
If you were to ask a hundred ‘PC MasterRace’ gaming enthusiasts what they use as a monitor on their uber-high end system the vast majority would tell you it is a 200+ frames per second capable monitor. If you were to ask a hundred semi-pro / prosumer photography enthusiasts what they use as a monitor they would say it is a 100% sRGB capable monitor. Both of which the EDG27240X offers. As such there is very little on the performance side of the equation to complain about.
Technological Innovation: 16 out of 20
With its combination of blazing fast 240 frames per second at 1440 resolution capabilities, with a rather wide color gamut the EDG27240X is obviously innovative. Though the real innovation is that this level of performance is now within reach of a lot more buyers… as hot darn $650 is a veritable steal of a deal compared to most! Sadly, the stand it comes equipped with is not innovative and does mar an otherwise impressive piece of kit. As such we have removed two points from the innovation score.
Build Quality & Warranty: 16 out of 20
On the one hand the warranty and build quality of the monitor itself is excellent. Thin bezels, not overly hazy glare protection (that still does a good job at reducing glare), perfectly positioned (and labeled) buttons. Even dual HDMI 2 and dual DP 1.4 ports. That is a lot to like. Sadly, the build quality of the stand and its mounting ‘hardware’ leaves a lot to be desired. So once again we have removed (another) three points from the final tally.
Value: 18 out of 20
Even when taking into account the ‘need’ to buy an actually useful stand to go along with the EDG27240X the overall value is still excellent. Put simply 7bills vs. 9 bills is darn close to being in the no-brainer end of the spectrum. It just annoys us that one has to spend more money (and throw out hardware) just to get an actually good final product. Nixeus really needs to raise the MSRP by 20-30 dollars and bring back their “height adjustable” stand as the stock option for all their X models. As such we have removed another point from the tally. What a shame.
Final Score: 87 out of 100
With its combination of buttery smooth frame rates and reasonably wide color gamut the Nixeus EDG27240X shows how far your hard-earned dollars can go if you look past the ‘usual suspects’. Just understand that in order to undercut the competition Nixeus did have to include a very lackluster stand. So, take the cost of a good aftermarket stand into your final equation before pulling the trigger on it.
