So if you have gotten this far one of the scenarios outlined on the previous page worked for… but you have an itch you can’t scratch. That itch is of course is wondering how much performance you have sacrificed on the alter of capacity and stability… and are wondering if biting the bullet and getting another set of faster ram is worth it.

So let’s run the numbers. Since AMD Ryzen series of CPUs are the new shiny we have created 7 fairly common(ish) configurations. All options are based upon the exact same system with just the RAM speed and timings changed. All but the DDR4-3200 (‘option 7’) consists of 4 sticks of RAM installed in all four slots of a ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero motherboard. To ensure consistency, all options were set to a 2T command timing response rate.

Option 1 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using only DDR4-2133 with tight timings of 14-14-14 at 1.2v

Option 2 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using 2 sticks of DDR4-2400 and 2 sticks of DDR4-2133 running at DDR4-2400 speeds with loose timings of 16-16-16 at 1.35v.

Option 3 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using only DDR4-2400 with tight timings of 15-15-15 at 1.2v.

Option 4 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using 2 sticks of DDR4-2400 and 2 sticks of DDR4-2666 running at DDR4-2666 speeds with loose timings of 17-17-17 at 1.35v.

Option 5 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using only DDR4-2666 running with tight timings of 15-17-17-17 at 1.2v.

Option 6 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using 2 sticks of DDR4-3200 and 2 sticks of DDR4-2666 running at DDR4-2800 speeds with loose timings 17-17-17 at 1.35v.

Option 7 represents a Ryzen 1800X system using only DDR4-3200 running with tight timings of 16-18-18 at 1.35v.

Ryzen Testbed:
• Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair VI Hero
• CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1800x
• Cooling: EVGA CLC 280 AIO
• Video Card(s): MSI GTX 980Ti Lightning
• SSD: 1x Crucial MX300 2050GB, 2x Intel DC S3700 800GB SSDs
• Power Supply: Corsair AX860i
