Thanks in no small part to Seagate’s mature influence, the past decade has seen LaCie become less flamboyant and over the top compared to their roots. Put bluntly, the LaCie of 2024 would be downright embarrassed by the Le Coq (which looked just like you would think it would… a rooster). As such this more mature and refined LaCie attituded bleeds over to their shipping container. So if you want your external storage solution to come clad in a box that may induce seizures… this is not the model for you. Instead this box is best described as conservative chic. Just as it should be. Seagate branded models are intended for home users and LaCie models are orientated more towards professionals.
This is not to say this is a bad or boring shipping container. It simply does not waste time or effort on being attention getting (or ‘flamboyant’ like some Seagate models). This is why LaCie has once again went with a nice, clean, classy all white box. An elegant carboard box with a large full color photo of the LaCie Mobile Drive Secure on the front, and all the details one needs in order to make an informed decision on what it is and is not liberally spread-out over all four sides of it. Equally impressive, and unlike many of its competition, there is not even a rounding error chance of accidentally buying the wrong capacity option… as the only real large dash of color is a large blue printed label that first grabs your attention and then clearly states what capacity version is housed inside. Just like its predecessor did, and we are in no shape nor form disappointed that LaCie did not mess with the blueprint.
Moving on. The internal protection is also the same as previous generation of LaCie Mobile models. This too is a good thing. Be it a Mobile HDD or Mobile HDD Secure when you open up the white box and remove the internals you will greeted with a two-piece cardboard inner container. This inner box is thick, slightly ‘spongey’, and all but ensures that the LaCie Mobile Drive Secure it protects will make it to its final destination. No matter what happens in-transit, and no matter if this means shipping it just across town or across the world you can rest easy it will get there. First time, every time. Just as one should expect from a professionally oriented model.
Sadly, the accessories included with the LaCie Mobile Drive Secure have also not been upgraded. That means in addition to the typical warranty and installation pamphlet you will find a good Type-C to Type-C USB cable, details on how to claim your free month of Adobe’s Creative Cloud plan… and access to Seagate’s Data Recovery Service (good for one free claim) for the entirety of the warranty period. For most this beyond good and clearly in the excellent end of the spectrum. Sadly, we do wish LaCie would go back to including two cables. The excellent Type-C to Type-C and a Type-C to Type-A. We say this as not every system (yet) has a free USB Type-C port but every rig will have a Type-A port. LaCie can not even claim compatibility issues as these tiny models sip power and are nowhere close to maxing out the older USB 3.0 Type-A power delivery standard. Thankfully, a Type-A adapter is a buck (or less) and a good Type-A to Type-C cable should already be in your arsenal of cables you have in your ‘tool box’.
