We are not going to spend all that much time explain the hows and whys of overclocking the STRIX GTX 1070 08G as there is not much to tell. It simply is the easiest card we have ever worked with and can make even the most novice of enthusiasts seem like seasoned veterans. All you need do is set the voltage as high as you wish, set the power limit to 120 percent… and slowly turn up the base clock. Test for ten to twenty minutes on fur mark and continue until it locks up. We usually start in 100mhz increments and then dial in 50 then 20 and then 5 to dial in the overclock maximum quickly and efficiently. When you think it is ready do a longer furmark test to make sure. This will take an hour or two… that’s it. When done increase the memory in 50 then 25 then 5 Mhz increments and in no time you will have found the maximum of your STRIX GTX 1070 08G.
Now with that all said we walked away both impressed and extremely frustrated as we knew there was still plenty of overclocking headroom left. We just could not activate it because of NVIDIA. Even when overclocked to the limits this card ran so cool it was scary – so we knew that if we could have been able to increase the voltage further than what NVIDA allows it would have gone even higher. By the same token we doubt many will find 2085 – i.e. 402Mhz more than a stock GTX 1070 or 225Mhz more than the STRIX GTX 1070 08G factory settings – on the Core; and a memory setting of 8808 or 800Mhz (effective) more than both the STRIX GTX 1070 08G and stock GTZ 170, to be anything less than impressive – as it is impressive.
It just could be even better if ASUS had been allowed to open up the BIOS. In the meantime, this is one of the fastest GTX 1070’s on the market and considering it only costs $40 more than a reference model that is just underscores how good this card really is… and the results do speak for themselves. With very little effort anyone, and we mean anyone, can get better than reference 1080 performance for a price that is more in line with a GTX 1070Ti. Color us impressed!
